Trim Frequency Regular, light trimming is almost always better for the hedge than infrequent, heavy cuts. Trim hedges when young to encourage dense growth and to form/train its shape. Regular maintenance ensures a healthy and attractive hedge.
Equipment Sharp, clean blades will enable smooth and precise cuts, which in-turn, will promote faster healing and recovery. Blunt blades on the other hand will cause ragged cuts increasing its vulnerability to disease and excessive damage. The proper equipment will also make the job more efficient (save time and effort) and reduce the risk of accidents and injury during trimming the process.
Trimming Technique Start from the bottom and work your way up. By doing this you are able to line the hedge up with where you'd like it to be sitting when cut, for an overall sharp and even finish.
Know your Hedge Certain types of hedges may have specific needs. Research your specific hedge variety, it is important to note that adjustments may be necessary based on its type.
Choose the Right Time Once you know your hedge, you can figure out the specific seasonal cycles, and why/when cuts are needing to be made. Generally, late winter and early spring are the best times to cut back an overgrown hedge, while summer is perfect for cuts to maintain shape and height. The dormant period through winter is also considered a good time to prune and trim back for deciduous hedges.
Weather Conditions Avoid trimming during extreme heat or drought to reduce stress on the hedge.
